New Tagalaka Research Committee

Why are we creating a Tagalaka Research Committee?

Setting up a research committee is important for several reasons. Usually, our projects are set up without our input on the research design, and the time frames are short. Our projects are happening separately when really they have similar goals and purposes - preserving our cultural knowledge, caring for Country and working with our people.

In partnership with James Cook University, we anticipate projects over the next 2-3 years. Projects are yet to be officially approved but our ongoing discussions include:

  1. Regional Ecosystem Accounting Pilot which we completed in 2023, we are expecting the final report in June 2024 and authorship of a journal article. There is potential additional project scope relating to this project.

  2. Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australian (CRCNA) Gilbert River Project. What are our cultural values relating to waterways? What are potential business or project opportunities from the area?

  3. Potential project relating to the Nature Repair Act 2023 and the proposed Nature Repair Market which the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water expect to launch in January 2025.

What will the Tagalaka Research Committee do?

  • Oversight and coordination of all the projects.

  • Authentic co-design.

  • Protect ownership of our knowledge (Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property).

  • Meet online, approximately once a month or as needed.

  • Provide wider support to projects other than the James Cook University Projects.

Will the Committee members be paid?

We have a small budget of approximately $20,000 for this committee over the 2-3 years. It is a small budget, so you won’t get rich but your input will be priceless.

Who will be Committee members?

The Committee will have 4 members. We anticipate 1 Board Member, the Senior Ranger (vacant) and 2 other members from our community. We are looking for members with experience:

  • Leading or managing research projects.

  • Developing and delivering positive co-design outcomes.

  • Understanding and translating academic language to plain English.
